With more media at Sha Tin than you can shake a stick at, every imaginable word about Able One’s performance in last night’s Hong Kong Mile has probably been said.
For me the win was a credit to every single person who has laid their hands on this marvellous nine-year-old during his long and illustrious career which now sees his earnings at HK$37m (NZ$6m approx.).
Able One was bred by Sir Patrick and Justine, Lady Hogan. I spoke with Sir Patrick this morning and he was pretty chuffed. The son of Cape Cross was born at Sir Patrick’s Cambridge Stud, so Marcus Corban and the team there deserve a pat on the back. Janine Dunlop (Phoenix Park) presented the horse, on behalf of his breeders, at the 2004 NZB Karaka Select Sale. So Janine certainly had a hand in where the horse is today.
Then there’s the long line of people who have been involved with Able One during his 41 race day starts to date; people like strappers, farriers, vets, track riders, jockeys and, of course, trainer John Moore.
The New Zealand breeding industry lives and dies on global racetrack results and be assured Able One’s success last night reminds buyers from that part of the world (if they needed reminding) just how good the NZ bred-and-raised thoroughbred is.
Well done Team Able One; we salute you.

Able One (NZ) has now won three international Group One races. He is seen here winning the 2010 Champions Mile. Photo courtesy HKJC.
