When the team at Coolmore rolled out High Chaparral for me and a client last Wednesday, Colm Santry introduced him as “the next Zabeel”.
That’s a huge call and Colm is the world’s greatest salesman, but I think he’s right.
I pulled his statistics this morning via Arion Pedigrees (www.arion.co.nz) and can bring you right up-to-date on High Chaparral, whose fee by the way, is A$99,000 to include 10% gst.
With oldest in the Northern Hemisphere being 6YO and oldest in the Southern Hemisphere being 5YO, he has the following figures…
- 259 winners from 478 runners worldwide
- 28 individual black type winners (56 stakes wins)
- 6 Group One winners (including So You Think)
- Winners in 20 countries
- 41 winners from 60 runners in Australia alone
- Dewar Award Trophy for 2010/2011 Season
- Champion Australian Sire (AEI) 2009/2010 & 2010/2011
Windsor Park Stud did a wonderful job with High Chaparral during the five seasons he stood there from 2005. The move to Coolmore happened last year, so the first Australian-conceived crop is now arriving.
We know how successful High Chaparral has already been; we know he has sired one of the best horses in the world right now – what we don’t know is what’s ahead.
My gut feeling is that he will sire a long line of classic staying types of horses who will win Derbies, Oaks, WFA features and Cups races. Yes, he probably is the next Zabeel, maybe even the next Sir Tristram.

Touch a champion sire & you never know your luck! Me & High Chaparral a week ago
