My photo of a very relaxed Fastnet Rock last Wednesday at Coolmore Stud
Last week a client and I spent the afternoon at Coolmore’s Australian headquarters in the Hunter Valley. Long-time employee Colm Santry was very generous with his time and showed us every corner of this vast (I understand it’s around 8000 acres) fabulous property – horse heaven with not a blade of grass out of place.
We also viewed the entire stallion roster – wow! I could rave on all day about what I saw & what I liked, but I got to thinking after photographing Fastnet Rock that this stallion is looking a distinct possibility of landing both Guineas races at Caulfield next month, if not the NZ 2000 Guineas and/or NZ 1000 Guineas as well at the start of November.
Smart Missile has in his sights the A$1m The Age Caulfield Guineas-Gr.1 (1600m) Saturday week. He would have had to be Phar Lap to win the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes last weekend from his outside barrier. Back against his own age group in the Guineas, he looks the horse to beat.
A few days later another of the Fastnet Rock’s, Atlantic Jewel, is looking a likely runner in the A$500,000 Schweppes Thousand Guineas-Gr.1 (1600m). Mark Kavanagh has saddled her up for three wins from as many times to the races. She appears to have the x-factor and is a worthy contender for the big fillies’ race at Caulfield.
The 3YO by Fastnet Rock I’m watching closely for the NZ Sothys 2000 Guineas-Gr.1 (1600m) at Riccarton Park on November 05 is Planet Rock. She’s immensely-gifted with a fabulous action. If Peter & Dawn Williams decide to take on the boys in the 2000 Guineas, she won’t be out of place. If they elect to hold her over for the NZB 1000 Guineas a week later it makes her chances of landing a Group One even better.
Guineas wins on both sides of the Tasman feasible for Fastnet Rock
